Ultra-Low Freezer Monitoring

Swift Sensors ultra-low freezer monitoring keeps watch on every -80 °C freezer in your facility, day and night. A wireless sensor with a sealed ultra-low probe reads the cabinet continuously, logs every value to the Swift Sensors Cloud Console, and sends an instant alert the moment a freezer starts warming, while there is still time to move samples.

ULT Freezer Monitoring, Alerts, and Records

An ultra-low temperature freezer holds the material a lab cannot replace: years of research samples, patient biospecimens, cell lines, reagents and ultra-cold vaccines. These units run hard at around -80 °C, and when one fails it rarely happens all at once. A compressor weakens, a door gasket ices over, a filter clogs, and the cabinet creeps upward over hours. A front-panel display and a local alarm only help if someone is standing in the freezer farm to see and hear them.

Swift Sensors ULT freezer monitoring puts that information in front of your team wherever they are. The SS3-110 sensor keeps its electronics outside the cabinet while a 1 m sealed probe reads inside, and a gateway sends each reading to the Swift Sensors Cloud Console. Set a threshold for every freezer, and instant alerts go out via email, SMS, or phone call as soon as a unit crosses it, at 3 a.m. as reliably as at noon. Every reading is stored automatically, giving you a continuous record for audits, sample chain-of-custody questions and conversations with your equipment service provider.

Because the system is wireless and battery-powered, it goes into an existing freezer room without new wiring or downtime, and it scales from a single ultra-low freezer to a full biorepository across several buildings.

Ultra-Low Temperature Monitoring for Labs

Best Wireless Sensor For Ultra-Low Freezers

Swift Sensors’ standard probes read down to -40 °C, so ultra-low storage needs its own sensor. The SS3-110 is Swift Sensors’ ultra-low freezer temperature monitor: a 1 m (3 ft) sealed probe measures from -100 °C to +32 °C with 0.35 °C accuracy and 0.01 °C precision, while the IP66-rated sensor body stays outside the cabinet. Readings are taken at an inspection rate you choose from 1 to 30 minutes, 5 minutes by default, and the sensor runs 6 to 8 years on two replaceable AAA lithium batteries. Add the SS-TB3 aluminum thermal buffer, rated from -196 °C to +125 °C, to smooth out brief swings when the door is opened. Thresholds, schedules and alerts are set per freezer in the Cloud Console.

FAQ

Most ultra-low freezers are set at or near -80 °C, which is why they are often called minus 80 freezers. The right setpoint and alarm limit for yours depend on what is stored and on your lab’s procedures. The SS3-110 reads down to -100 °C, so it covers the full working range of a mechanical ultra-low freezer with room to spare, and you set the alert threshold per unit in the Console.

The electronics of a wireless sensor are not built to sit inside a -80 °C cabinet, and thick, insulated steel walls block radio signals. The SS3-110 solves both: the sensor body mounts outside the freezer, and only the 1 m sealed probe goes inside. The probe reads the cabinet, and the sensor transmits over Bluetooth 5 to a gateway up to 100 m away in line of sight, or 30 m non line of sight.

An ultra-low freezer data logger records temperatures for later review, which documents a failure but does not prevent one. Swift Sensors logs every reading the same way, and it also sends instant alerts via email, SMS, or phone call the moment a freezer crosses its threshold. You get the record for your audit and the warning in time to move samples.

A built-in display and alarm are important, but both work only for someone who is nearby. Most freezer failures that destroy samples happen overnight, on weekends or over holidays. Remote monitoring adds an independent sensor, a stored history, and alerts that reach the right people wherever they are, escalating to the next tier if nobody responds. The Console also alerts if a sensor or gateway stops reporting, so the freezer is watched even when the room is empty.

Often, yes. Freezers usually decline before they fail: the cabinet takes longer to recover after the door is opened, the average temperature creeps upward, or readings start to swing. Because every reading is stored in the Cloud Console, those trends are visible over days and weeks, giving you a reason to schedule service before a failure. Swift Sensors reports the temperature; your equipment provider diagnoses the freezer.

No. The SS3-110 measures down to -100 °C, which covers mechanical ultra-low freezers, and liquid nitrogen storage runs far colder. For LN2 and anything below -100 °C, Swift Sensors uses the SS3-117 wireless thermocouple adapter with a third-party T-type thermocouple probe, which brings those readings into the same Cloud Console with the same alerts and reports. The SS-TB3 aluminum thermal buffer is rated from -196 °C to +125 °C, so it can be used in liquid nitrogen as well.

A Swift Sensors system requires the purchase of at least one gateway, at least one sensor, and a monitoring plan.

  • Swift Sensors wireless sensors measure temperature, humidity, door activity, water leaks and other critical conditions. Each sensor is smaller than a credit card and has battery life of 6-8 years. The sensor transmits data via Bluetooth 5 (BLE5) and connects to the gateway with a push of a button.
  • The gateway receives data from each sensor and then transmits the data to the cloud console via local ethernet, WiFi, or cellular network (optional module). Each gateway supports up to 150 sensors within 100 m line of sight (30 m non line of sight).
  • The monitoring plan is very simple. The fee is based on the number of sensors you deploy. You can pay monthly, annually, or multi-year. There are no contracts required. View real-time analytics, download compliance reports, and receive instant mobile alerts on any device.

The sensor range is up to 100 m line of sight and 30 m non line of sight depending on the facility infrastructure and equipment located between the sensor and the gateway. The sensors use the BLE5 wireless communication protocol which allows signal transmission through doors and walls constructed of standard building materials.

Each sensor uses two AAA lithium polymer batteries with an average lifespan of 6-8 years.  Replacement batteries are readily available at hardware stores and various retail locations.

What is Ultra-Low Freezer Monitoring?

Ultra-low freezer monitoring is the continuous, automated tracking of temperature inside freezers that run at or near -80 °C. Instead of reading the front panel once a shift and writing it on a log sheet, a probe placed in the cabinet takes readings around the clock and sends them to a cloud platform. When the temperature moves past the limit you set, the system alerts your team by text, email or voice, and every reading is stored to build a complete record.

What an ultra-low monitoring system does

Reads the cabinet continuously

With a probe rated for -80 °C storage, not a general-purpose sensor.

Alerts the right people

By email, SMS, or phone call the moment a freezer crosses its threshold, escalating if nobody responds.

Logs every reading automatically

Replacing paper logs with a complete digital history and a Daily Extremes report of each freezer's minimum and maximum.

Shows trends over days and weeks

Such as slower recovery after door openings or a warming baseline.

Covers every freezer in one account

From a single lab to a multi-building freezer farm.

Installs without wiring

Using battery-powered wireless sensors in the rooms you already have.

Swift Sensors builds its ultra-low offering around the SS3-110 sensor and the Swift Sensors Cloud Console. You set a threshold and an alert list for each freezer, see every unit on one screen, attach corrective action notes to an alert, and pull up to 5 years of stored temperature history for an audit, an inspection, or a sample integrity question in seconds rather than hunting through binders. NIST Calibration through an ANAB ISO 17025:2017 accredited laboratory covers standard points from -50 °C to +150 °C, and a -80 °C point is available through an additional accredited lab.

Ultra-Low Temperature Freezer Maintenance Signals

Med Lab Freezer Temperature Sensors

An ultra-low temperature freezer works harder than any other cold storage unit in the building, and routine ultra-low temperature freezer maintenance is what keeps it running: clean condenser filters, ice-free door gaskets, enough clearance for airflow, and a service plan from the manufacturer or a qualified technician. Monitoring does not replace any of that. What it adds is evidence about how each freezer is really performing between service visits.

Signals worth watching in the Cloud Console

01

Slow recovery after door openings

If a freezer takes longer each week to get back to its setpoint, it is losing capacity.

02

A rising baseline

A cabinet that used to hold -80 °C and now sits a few degrees warmer is telling you something.

03

Wider swings

Larger peaks and dips than the unit’s usual pattern can point to a compressor or control problem.

04

Room conditions

Freezers in a hot room run harder. An SS3-101 ambient sensor shows whether the room is part of the problem.

What monitoring gives you

Swift Sensors does not service or repair freezers. What monitoring gives you is time: an ultra-low temperature freezer repair call placed while the unit is still holding temperature, with the readings your technician needs to see, instead of an emergency move of every sample after it has failed.
