Historically, the variety of equipment and multitude of vendors that contribute to airport operations made tracking performance metrics extremely challenging. A mechanical or environmental issue would often not be reported until a customer made a complaint. This was a reactive approach that resulted in unnecessary damage to equipment, service outages, inefficient use of technician time, and a poor customer experience.
